Description of Installation

The DimensionElevator is a set of four screens arranged to make up the four walls of a room. Four video projectors are arranged outside of the room so that each projector covers one screen with its projected image. A pair of stereo speakers above each screen provides an audio environment to match the images.

Personal Statement

The DimensionElevator is an immersive environment, when you enter it, you are surrounded by it. From the inside you will only be able to see what is being projected by it. The system can be used to recreate environments. However, it is not a 3D projection system. Also the projected environments will appear increasingly distorted as one moves from the center of the room toward any of the edges.

Entrance/Exit
A flap in the screens in a corner of the room allows people to enter and exit the space.

Rear Projection
Because the video is projected from the behind, a person is free to move all about the room and even touch the screen without casting a shadow or otherwise interfering with the image

Size
The screens will be 16 feet wide by 12 feet tall. We chose these dimensions because we want there to be an equal amount of coverage above and below a viewer. We also want a scale that will be personal but not so small that a person will feel that they are inside a box. (Although it would be nice to experiment with smaller systems) We anticipate that 1 to 5 people can experience the installation at a time.

Image Resolution
The resolution of each projected image is anticipated to be at 640 pixels wide by 480 pixels high. With 16 by 12 foot screens, this equates to 3.3 pixels per inch. That is, each square inch of the screen will have 3.3 pixels across and 3.3 pixels down. 640 pixels/16 feet = 40 pixels / foot or 3.33 pixels/inch
